National Arts in Education Week

In July of 2010, the United States House of Representative passed House Resolution 275 designating the second week of September to be “Arts in Education week”. The Alliance Theatre is proud to celebrate National Arts in Education Week, September 14-20, 2014. We are excited to shine the spotlight on our Education programs throughout the week.

The H. Con. R. 275 states, “Whereas art is integral to the lives of many United States citizens and can improve the vitality of communities and the Nation; and Whereas the week beginning on the second Sunday of September would be an appropriate week to designate as Arts in Education Week: Now, therefore, be it.”

Through our outstanding programming we reach students of all ages through many different avenues; today we are sharing some high level numbers of our impact through the programs we highlight this week.

Starting with our youngest learners, we reach children from 3 months up with our Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and our Baby ArtsPlay™ program. In the 2013/14 school year, we reached 302 children with Baby ArtsPlay™ and 2,394 children with Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts in-school professional residencies in 7 school systems.

Our most familiar program for little one’s is Theatre for the Very Young (TVY). TVY is a highly-interactive, professional theatre performance for ages 18 months – 5 year olds and their grownups. In the 2013/14 Season, we delivered 169 performances reaching 6,891patrons through field trips, tours, and in-house performances.

Our School-Day Matinees are our most well-known education outreach program, and reached 31,524 students from every grade level last year. The Dramaturgy by Students program directly informs and supports our productions by providing study guides and dramaturgical materials for each show. This past year Dramaturgy by Students served 365 students in 7 school systems.

Teens have some of the most varied and dynamic opportunities through the collaborative ArtsVibe Teen Program, in-school Collision Plus, and more. ArtsVibe Teen Program served a total of 15,474 teens, 3,891 of which were through Alliance Theatre programs. Through our in-school professional learning program, Collision Plus reached 680 Middle and High School students in 7 school systems.

Our Educational programming does not stop when our audience graduates High School; our Acting Program provides the opportunity to participate our art form for those who never want to stop learning. With our Adult Acting Program we reached 750 students this past year.

We hope you will enjoy and celebrate this National Arts in Education week with us and perhaps learn something new in the process.
