SUMMARY:Exhibit: Foxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit: Foxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance \nFoxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance is an exhibit designed specifically for the production of DARLIN’ CORY. It includes six interpretive panels from the Foxfire Museum that highlight the stories of Appalachian women and their experiences in the mountains\, from shape-note singin’ to banjo-pickin’. The display will also include access to a digital exhibit\, where you can hear the voices of the women from their original interviews\, dating as early as 1970. \nCome explore mountain history before or after the show in the North Alcove\, 2nd Floor. \nMore about Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center \nNestled on the side of Black Rock Mountain in Rabun County\, Georgia\, the Foxfire Museum encompasses over 100 acres\, eight of which has been developed into a campus of historic buildings representing Appalachian culture and traditions. On any day of the week\, visitors can take a self-guided tour\, following a half-mile walking path and exploring the buildings with the aid of a free mobile app. The tour leads visitors through an 1820s homestead\, exhibits on mountain crafts like woodworking and quilting\, and a powerful display on the Cherokee removal. Several cabins are used by local artisans as studio spaces where they demonstrate their crafts\, including blacksmithing\, broom making\, and weaving. The museum also continues its educational mission through special programming for K-12 students and an immersive summer leadership program for Rabun County high schoolers. The Foxfire Museum has so much to offer\, but never strays from its core mission of supporting its community and celebrating the rich history and traditions of Southern Appalachia. Listen to oral histories straight from the pages of The Foxfire Book on the museum’s podcast\, “It Still Lives\,” available on any podcasting platform or the Foxfire website. Support the preservation of mountain culture and community education by donating to the museum\, purchasing a museum membership\, or subscribing to the student-produced Foxfire magazine! SUMMARY:Community Talk: Women’s Voices from the Mountain South
DESCRIPTION:Community Talk: Women’s Voices from the Mountain South\nFriday\, September 17th\n7:30pm\, prior to the 8pm performance of DARLIN’ CORY\nMemorial Arts Building // Event Room\, 2nd Floor  \nJoin us for a pre-show talk with Kami Ahrens\, Curator at the Foxfire Museum and author of a forthcoming book of interviews with women from Southern Appalachia. Ahrens will highlight the stories of a diverse group of women from the region and share materials from the museum’s collection of Appalachian culture on display in the Memorial Arts Building during the run of DARLIN’ CORY.  \nThe Foxfire magazines and books were first published more than 50 years ago by a group of high school English students and their teacher who wanted to learn more about their disappearing mountain culture and combat discriminating stereotypes of the region. The museum—an outgrowth of the original oral history project—and best-selling publication continues to serve as an important institution for preserving and documenting Appalachian culture and heritage. \nThis is a free event for ticket holders of DARLIN’ CORY. No RSVP required.
