SUMMARY:Community Talk: Women’s Voices from the Mountain South
DESCRIPTION:Community Talk: Women’s Voices from the Mountain South\nFriday\, September 17th\n7:30pm\, prior to the 8pm performance of DARLIN’ CORY\nMemorial Arts Building // Event Room\, 2nd Floor  \nJoin us for a pre-show talk with Kami Ahrens\, Curator at the Foxfire Museum and author of a forthcoming book of interviews with women from Southern Appalachia. Ahrens will highlight the stories of a diverse group of women from the region and share materials from the museum’s collection of Appalachian culture on display in the Memorial Arts Building during the run of DARLIN’ CORY.  \nThe Foxfire magazines and books were first published more than 50 years ago by a group of high school English students and their teacher who wanted to learn more about their disappearing mountain culture and combat discriminating stereotypes of the region. The museum—an outgrowth of the original oral history project—and best-selling publication continues to serve as an important institution for preserving and documenting Appalachian culture and heritage. \nThis is a free event for ticket holders of DARLIN’ CORY. No RSVP required.

SUMMARY:CLASSIC REMIX Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to the #ClassicRemix watch party! \nJoin us Monday August 16th as we stream an original Classic Remix project by our Teen Ensemble\, inspired by Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. \nIn a world where books and literature are forbidden and burned\, a young fireman\, Jason Carter\, meets an unusual teenage girl who dares to question the status quo. Encouraged by her passionate appeal\, From the Ashes follows Carter as he searches for answers and finds the courage to stand up for the most unthinkable act–reading a book. In a nod to Ray Bradbury’s classic Fahrenheit 451\, Carter must ask himself: How much is he willing to lose to gain his freedom? \nTo celebrate its release and the culmination of our digital season\, we’re throwing a party — @alliancetheatre! Join us on Alliance Theatre Anywhere and on Twitter starting at 7pm Monday\, August 16th. Tweet along with us using the hashtag #ClassicRemix. \nIf you’re not available for the watch party\, you can watch From the Ashes anytime starting on Monday on Alliance Theatre Anywhere. \nGet a Reminder \nJoin us on Twitter \n

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Foxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit: Foxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance \nFoxfire & Appalachian Women @ the Alliance is an exhibit designed specifically for the production of DARLIN’ CORY. It includes six interpretive panels from the Foxfire Museum that highlight the stories of Appalachian women and their experiences in the mountains\, from shape-note singin’ to banjo-pickin’. The display will also include access to a digital exhibit\, where you can hear the voices of the women from their original interviews\, dating as early as 1970. \nCome explore mountain history before or after the show in the North Alcove\, 2nd Floor. \nMore about Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center \nNestled on the side of Black Rock Mountain in Rabun County\, Georgia\, the Foxfire Museum encompasses over 100 acres\, eight of which has been developed into a campus of historic buildings representing Appalachian culture and traditions. On any day of the week\, visitors can take a self-guided tour\, following a half-mile walking path and exploring the buildings with the aid of a free mobile app. The tour leads visitors through an 1820s homestead\, exhibits on mountain crafts like woodworking and quilting\, and a powerful display on the Cherokee removal. Several cabins are used by local artisans as studio spaces where they demonstrate their crafts\, including blacksmithing\, broom making\, and weaving. The museum also continues its educational mission through special programming for K-12 students and an immersive summer leadership program for Rabun County high schoolers. The Foxfire Museum has so much to offer\, but never strays from its core mission of supporting its community and celebrating the rich history and traditions of Southern Appalachia. Listen to oral histories straight from the pages of The Foxfire Book on the museum’s podcast\, “It Still Lives\,” available on any podcasting platform or the Foxfire website. Support the preservation of mountain culture and community education by donating to the museum\, purchasing a museum membership\, or subscribing to the student-produced Foxfire magazine! SUMMARY:Hands Up: A Community Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Hands Up: A Community Portrait\nLobby Installation // Hertz Stage Lobby\nOctober 8-31\, 2021\, available to view pre- and post-show \nHands Up: A Community Portrait is a community art project created in conjunction with the production of The New Black Fest’s Hands Up: 7 Profiles\, 7 Testaments. Images of hands that circulate in our society can reduce the experience of Blackness to either a “hands up” symbol of victimization or the fist symbol of resistance. These portraits go beyond this codified binary to use hands as a motif for personal storytelling. The exhibit features seven participants from local community organizations who share their stories of resilience and joy through the expressive and functional things that their hands do in their lives. It includes access to a digital archive\, where you can hear the voices of the participants from their interviews. This exhibit is on display in the Hertz lobby during the run of Hands Up. \nIn partnership with: \n
