SUMMARY:Behind the Play: DREAM HOU$E
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 13th 2022 // 7pm\nOnline via zoom meeting (link will be emailed and posted on the day of the event) \nACCESS THE LIVE CONVERSATION ON THURSDAY\, JAN 13\, AT 7PM HERE\nJoin us for a special preview event with the cast and creative team of DREAM HOU$E\, featuring a conversation with Director Laurie Woolery and Playwright Eliana Pipes and a performance from the cast!  This event is moderated by Amanda Watkins (Producer) with community response provided by Veronica Maldonado-Torres\, President of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHCC). GHCC’s CREAR supports Latino representation in the arts. \nIn DREAM HOU$E\, two Latina sisters go on an HGTV-style reality show to sell their family home\, hoping to capitalize on the gentrification in their “changing neighborhood.” As they perform for the camera\, one sister grapples with turmoil in the family’s ancestral past while the other learns how much she’s willing to sacrifice for the family’s future. What is the cultural cost of progress in America — and is cashing in always selling out? DREAM HOU$E is the winner of the 2021/22 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nEliana Pipes is a playwright\, performer and filmmaker. Her plays include Dream Hou$e (world premiere co-production at Alliance Theater\, Long Wharf Theater\, and Baltimore Center Stage)\, Unf*ckwithable (Drama League DirectorFest)\, Cowboy and the Moon (Dramatists Guild Foundation Fellowship\, NNPN MFA Playwright’s Workshop)\, Lorena: a Tabloid Epic (The Playwright’s Realm Scratchpad Series)\, and Stand and Wait (The Fire This Time Festival). She’s been awarded the KCACTF Harold & Mimi Steinberg Award and Ken Ludwig Scholarship\, Leah Ryan Fund Prize for Emerging Women Writers\, National Latinx Playwright Award\, Dr. Floyd Gaffney National Playwriting Prize\, and a two-time finalist status for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwriting Conference. As a filmmaker\, she won the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women through the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\, and the inaugural WAVE Grant through Wavelength Productions to support the production of her animated short film. BA Columbia University\, MFA Playwriting Boston University. More at www.elianapipes.com \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nLaurie Woolery is a director\, playwright\, citizen artist and community organizer who works in theaters across the country including The Public Theater\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, Yale Repertory\, Trinity Repertory\, Goodman Theatre\, Cornerstone Theater Company\, and South Coast Repertory. Projects include the world premiere of Mary Kathryn Nagle’s Manahatta at both Yale Repertory and Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the world premiere musical of As You Like It co-created with Shaina Taub for the Public Theater. In 2020\, Laurie produced the documentary Under the Greenwood Tree that tells the story of how the Public Works community banded together amidst the global pandemic and antiracist uprising as well as curating the national community public art installation The Seed Project on the façade of The Public Theater featuring 164 Public Works community members sharing their hopes for the future. Laurie has developed new work with diverse communities ranging from incarcerated women to residents of a Kansas town devastated by a tornado. She creates site-specific work ranging from a working sawmill in Eureka to the banks of the Los Angeles River. Laurie is the Director of Public Works at The Public Theater\, a program that seeks to engage the people of New York by making them creators and not just spectators. Working with partner organizations in all 5 boroughs\, Public Works invites members of diverse communities to join in the creation of ambitious works of participatory theater. Laurie is the former Associate Artistic Director of Cornerstone Theater Company\, Conservatory Director at South Coast Repertory and founding member of The Sol Project. Laurie is a recipient of the Fuller Road Fellowship for Women Directors of Color\, 2020 United States Artists recipient and the 2021 American for the Arts Johnson Fellowship for Artists Transforming Communities. www.lauriewoolery.com

SUMMARY:Community Talk: Gentrification and culture in American communities
DESCRIPTION:Hertz Stage // Memorial Arts Building  \nFollowing the 7:30pm performance of DREAM HOU$E  \nIn Eliana Pipes’ DREAM HOU$E\, past and present collide in an effort to lay claim to a family’s future. As gentrification takes root and prices soar across metro Atlanta\, many are faced with difficult housing decisions that have long lasting effects on families and communities. For some\, lack of affordable housing and pathways to home ownership can spell displacement that tends to impact communities of color the most. For others\, selling a home comes with its own calculus of accumulating financial wealth at the expense of cultural ties. This panel explores themes from the play to examine the cost of progress in Atlanta – one of the fastest gentrifying cities in the US – through the lens of housing and real estate\, public policy\, and activism.  This conversation is free with a ticket purchase to the performance on February 10th.  \n  \nModerated by Justin Anderson\, Director\, Educator\, Place Maker\, and REALTOR® \n \nJustin Anderson is a licensed real estate consultant with The Welcome Home Atlanta Team\, powered by Keller Williams First Atlanta. He recently served as the Associate Artistic Director at Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville\, Georgia\, directing dozens of award-winning plays\, musicals\, and new works\, in addition to directing throughout the southeast and internationally. In addition\, he is an adjunct faculty at Kennesaw State University\, teaching courses in acting\, directing\, and musical theatre.  www.welcomehomeatlanta.com  \n\nFeaturing Guest Speakers:  \n  \nJoshua Humphries • Director of the Office of Housing & Community Development at City of Atlanta  \nIn his current role as Director of Housing and Community Development for the City of Atlanta\, Josh leads a team that implements innovative programs and policy solutions to improve housing affordability and expand small business opportunities in Atlanta. With initiatives ranging from zoning reform to better use of public land for affordable housing\, the team looks for ways to positively impact the lives of Atlanta residents. Prior to joining the City of Atlanta\, Josh worked to advance economic justice as a community organizer and community development leader in Los Angeles and New York City. Josh has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Kennesaw State University and a master of divinity in community organizing from Fuller Theological Seminary. Email Josh at jhumphries@atlantaga.gov.  \n  \nKing Williams • Author\, Writer\, and Documentary Filmmaker   \nKing Williams is a documentary filmmaker\, journalist\, podcast host\, and author based in Atlanta\, GA\, who specializes in gentrification\, urbanism\, race\, history and transit. He is also the creator of The Neighborhood Watch\, a podcast on Atlanta’s intersections of urbanism\, history\, and culture.   \n  \nJulie Ju-Youn Kim RA AIA • Architect and Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology  \nJulie Ju-Youn Kim RA AIA is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology and founder and principal of c2architecturestudio\, an award-winning architectural practice. With her highly theatrical and stylized concept albums\, she has garnered eight Grammy nominations and has developed her own label imprint\, Wondaland Arts Society. SUMMARY:Palefsky Collision Project
DESCRIPTION:For three weeks each summer\, the Alliance Theatre assembles a diverse group of 20 teenagers from metro Atlanta to explore and unpack a classic text under the guidance of a professional playwright and director. Through improvisational exercises\, oral history\, choreography\, the individual performing talents they possess\, and their writing\, the teenagers create a new piece inspired by the classic text but perceived through their own utterly unique and contemporary prism. The Palefsky Collision Project affords teens a unique theatrical experience and gives them ownership of a performance at the Alliance. It also gives students validity – confidence in their talents\, strength for the future\, and power in their decisions. \nThrough this dynamic project\, metro Atlanta teens create theater for and about themselves by “colliding” with a dramatic text\, reinforcing the idea that theater can address their particular ideas and feelings. \n \nText: Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings by Joy Harjo \nPerformances\nPublic performances of the 2022 Palefsky Collision Project will take place in-person. Tickets are free\, but advanced registration is required! \n\nSaturday\, July 9\, 2022 // 7 PM\nSunday\, July 10\, 2022 // 2:30 PM\n\n2022 Participants\n \n \nThis experience is free to all participants through generous support from Howard and Victoria Palefsky. The Palefsky Collision Project takes place with the support of the Mellon Foundation’s National Playwright Residency Program administered in partnership with Howlround. \n
