Tony Award-winning Actor Beth Leavel in not new to Atlanta. She last performed on the Alliance Stage as Ma Tuck in the hit musical adaptation of Tuck Everlasting. Leavel is back in a widely different role, playing the larger-than-life Broadway celebrity Dee Dee Allen in the upcoming world premiere musical, The Prom. In The Prom, Dee Dee’s most recent production, Eleanor Roosevelt – The Musical, has quickly closed following a terrible review. She’s in desperate need of some positive publicity, so she looks for a good cause to lend her support. She finds one in Emma – a high school student in Indiana whose prom was canceled when she announced her intentions to bring her girlfriend.
The role is not a stretch for Leavel, who is herself a Broadway icon. She won the Tony Award for her role as the Drowsy Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone, and has starred in 11 other Broadway productions including Baby It’s You! (Tony Nomination), Young Frankenstein, Mamma Mia!, and 42nd Street.
The Prom director Casey Nicholaw (Tuck Everlasting, Something Rotten!, The Book of Mormon) called Leavel “his muse,” and added that before he directed her in The Drowsy Chaperone and Elf, the two performed together in productions of Show Boat and Crazy for You.
In a recent interview with Encore Magazine, Leavel said of The Prom, “This show leads with a wonderful heart. Dee Dee has a fantastic song, an Evita moment, in Act 1, and an amazing ballad in Act 2.” Read the entire interview with Beth Leavel on EncoreAtlanta.com – https://encoreatlanta.com/dame-leavel-leads-alliance-theatre-prom/
See Beth Leavel in The Prom from August 18 – September 25. Tickets are available at www.alliancetheatre.org/theprom.
