For the safety of yourself and others, we hope you’re staying home like we are! Because we’re all sad about missing out on shows (including our own Naked Mole Rat, which will be back next season due to popular demand), we’ve compiled a list of musicals we love that are available online!
If you want to pay the extra $9 a month (or want to binge several musicals during the week-long free trial), Amazon has a great add-on channel called BroadwayHD! In addition to several musicals and plays spanning decades, we’re especially excited about The King and I, Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby, the 25th Anniversary concert performance of Les Miserables, Daddy Long Legs (a little-known two-person musical that will tug at your heartstrings), and the 25th Anniversary Phantom of the Opera (which you can watch and immediately follow up with Love Never Dies, the slightly disappointing sequel). We’ve already watched a low-quality recording of The Pirates of Penzance, Puffs (a play about the minor characters in a well-known series about a boy wizard), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond!
Tired of watching Frozen II on Disney+? Introduce your children to the favorites of your own childhood, including Disney Channel musicals such as High School Musical or Camp Rock, classics like The Sound of Music or Pete’s Dragon, or musicals you might have missed such as Newsies (who can resist a young Christian Bale?) or Annie (the 1999 version with a star-studded cast that includes Victor Garber, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Kathy Bates, Alan Cumming, and a very young Sarah Hyland.)
Hulu’s offerings are a bit lacking, but we managed to find the 2004 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, Big Fish (although this story is a little weird, who can resist Ewan McGregor’s gorgeous voice?), and FX’s recent TV series based on Broadway legends, Fosse/Verdon. For kids, we recommend The Prince of Egypt and El Dorado!
Netflix has quite a few musicals that are near and dear to us, including the 2007 version of the musical Hairspray, Burlesque (Cher and Stanley Tucci and Christina Aguilera – oh, my!), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (which isn’t on Disney+ yet for some reason), and, if you’re feeling spooky, Sweeney Todd. Also, did you know that there is a Shrek musical? It stars Brian d’Arcy James and Sutton Foster and it’s on Netflix – what more do you need to know?
