Dwight Andrews is thrilled to return to the Alliance with this production of Purpose. He has worked on over fifteen productions at the Alliance including Pearl Cleage’s Flying West and Blues for an Alabama Sky. He is the proud recipient of the Alliance’s Reiser Fellowship which supported his development of a new music theatre work on W.E.B. Dubois entitled from Grace to Accra. He is internationally known for his association with playwright August Wilson and director Lloyd Richards, having provided music direction for five of Wilson’s Broadway plays, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, and Seven Guitars. Additional New York credits include the Broadway revivals of Ma Rainey and Raisin in the Sun. His most Broadway work was The Ohio State Murders, directed by Kenny Leon and starring Audra McDonald. Some of his film credits include, The Piano Lesson, Miss Evers Boys, and the documentary film W.E.B. Dubois: A Biography in Four Voices, directed by Louis Massiah. In addition to his work in the theater and film, Andrews is the pastor of Atlanta’s First Congregational Church and Professor of Music Theory and African American Music at Emory University. He was recently recognized with the WABE’s Lois Reitzes Leader of the Arts Award.
