The Alliance will present a beloved family musical, to be announced separately, as its inaugural production on the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families
Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses, and Managing Director Mike Schleifer, are pleased to announce the productions of the Alliance’s 57th season.
“We're delighted to share such profoundly moving stories with our community next season – a mixture of beloved classics, vital new plays from emerging artists, multi-disciplinary collaborations, and a massive new musical by a global icon, produced in tandem with world-class theater for young audiences on the brand new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families,” said Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses in a joint statement. “These shows and these artists triumphantly remind us of our shared humanity in entertaining, joyful, and heartbreaking ways.”
The 57th season will begin this summer with MILO IMAGINES THE WORLD, a new musical for young audiences based on the beloved book by Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson. With playful songs by Atlanta's own Christian Magby and Christian Albright (The Incredible Book Eating Boy) and a book by Atlanta native Terry Guest, MILO IMAGINES THE WORLD is a story of hope, empathy, and the boundless power of creativity.
In the fall on The Coca-Cola Stage, the Alliance will co-produce with The Atlanta Opera a bold new staging of the beloved classic musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. A story of resilience and hope, FIDDLER weaves together family tradition challenged by the winds of change through one of Broadway's most unforgettable scores. This production is directed by The Atlanta Opera’s Artistic Director, Tomer Zvulun.
On the Hertz Stage, Alliance will produce the Atlanta premiere of the critically-acclaimed thriller, COVENANT. Described as “a striking Southern Gothic work” (The New York Times), COVENANT explores the gripping power of belief and the thin veil between rumor and truth. COVENANT is directed by Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden.
For the holidays, the Alliance will again present the Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL on The Coca-Cola Stage. Described by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as “high art of the season…a nostalgic feast for the eyes” audiences will be transported to the streets of London for the uplifting redemption story of Ebenezer Scrooge, told with beautiful live music.
In January 2026, the Alliance will celebrate the opening of the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families with a magical, musical production, to be announced in conjunction with an upcoming media release wholly devoted to this pivotal moment in Alliance history. The Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families will be a transformative space for Atlanta’s youngest patrons, featuring thoughtfully curated, year-round programming by Alliance Theatre and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center. Alliance Theatre programming on the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families will be supported by the Imagine Endowment, a permanent fund which will keep ticket prices highly accessible for a greatly expanded base of young audiences, provide field trip resources for Georgia schools, and support high-quality streaming for classrooms around the globe. The Alliance’s Imagine Endowment Campaign has raised $9 million of its $10 million goal to date and will ensure that the lifelong academic and mental health benefits that come with early exposure to world-class theatrical experiences are available to young audiences of all backgrounds for generations to come.
“Opening the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families will not only transform the Woodruff Arts Center but promises to transform what it means to grow up in Atlanta,” said Kajese-Bolden and Moses. “It's the culmination of a dream and the realization of a vision to make theatre a birthright for every child in our community. We cannot wait to cut the ribbon on this new stage and welcome generations of Atlantans to their new artistic home.”
The Alliance will then present DUEL REALITY – an epic, cirque-infused performance inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. From The 7 Fingers, the high-flying troupe behind the awe-inspiring stunts in the Alliance’s Broadway musical Water for Elephants, DUEL REALITY will feature their signature electrifying mix of circus, storytelling, magic, dance, and acrobatics that dazzles the senses and stirs the heart.
On the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will produce the world premiere of the 22nd winner of its celebrated Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, FIRES, OHIO, by Beth Hyland from the University of California San Diego. Inspired by the classic family drama Uncle Vanya, FIRES, OHIO updates a beloved story for our painfully absurd present, taking a hilarious and heartfelt look at the natural (and personal) disasters that transform our everyday lives. Past winners of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition have become some of today’s most exciting playwrights and writers, including Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue inspired the 2017 Academy Award-winning film for Best Picture, Moonlight; Mansa Ra, whose winning play Too Heavy For Your Pocket received multiple productions including Off-Broadway; and a.k. payne, whose Alliance/Kendeda Competition-winning play Furlough’s Paradise was the winner of this year’s Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
The season will close with the world premiere musical, BASURA. Nine-time Grammy Award® winner Gloria Estefan — whose music has sold over 100 million records worldwide — has shaped generations through song. Now, she joins her daughter and acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Estefan, to co-write the music and lyrics for BASURA, a powerful and bold new musical inspired by the true story of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra, where young artists turn scrap material into instruments and music into possibilities. This world premiere musical continues Estefan’s global legacy — proving that music can rise from anywhere and change everything.
BASURA is directed by the Broadway stage visionary Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen) and written by National Latino Playwriting Award-Winner Karen Zacarías (Native Gardens, Destiny of Desire). Grammy Award® and Tony Award® winner Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, In the Heights) is the musical supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger. Patricia Delgado (Buena Vista Social Club) will choreograph, and Ken Cerniglia (Hadestown, Aladdin) rounds out the team as dramaturg.
Based on the award-winning documentary film Landfill Harmonic, the new musical carries the sound of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra farther than anyone could have ever imagined. BASURA is an unforgettable journey of rhythm, resilience, and extraordinary music — a radiant, heart-swelling reminder that even in the most unlikely places, you can build something beautiful.
“This is a story that has been close to my heart for several years since I first encountered the determination and ingenuity of the young people of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra. Emily and I are thrilled for our music to be a part of telling their story in this original musical. We could not be more excited for BASURA to begin its theatrical life in city as influential and diverse as Atlanta with a theater as consequential as the Alliance.“ – Gloria Estefan
The Alliance Theatre’s Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young will produce four plays developed specifically for children who are newborn through five years old and their caregivers. These productions include the word premiere, RHYTHM & THREAD, celebrating the beauty of storytelling through the art of quilting; THE BIRTHDAY OF THE WORLD, a world premiere inspired by the book by Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen; the holiday celebration (KNOCK, KNOCK), discovering the mix of holiday traditions observed by the residents of the same apartment building; and DINOSAUR, an epic dino-tastic adventure that will leave little ones laughing and roaring for more.
The Alliance will also produce two productions for elementary and middle school audiences that will tour to metro Atlanta schools. In ROOB AND NOOB, designed for elementary school audiences, two curious scientists build machines from simple objects in the style of Rube Goldberg machines to explore the wonder and sensations of the four seasons. THE MELVIN INVENTION, developed for middle schoolers, tells the story of two brainy students who use their 3D printer to invent Melvin – the coolest, most confident 7th grader ever. Packed with laughs and relatable moments, this play shows students that being themselves is the coolest thing of all.
New Play Development
The Alliance will continue its important work developing new plays through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition and its Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab.
The Alliance is pleased to announce this year’s finalists of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. These plays will receive developmental workshops and staged readings as part of Alliance/Kendeda Week celebrating new works in 2026. The finalists of the 2025/26 season are:

Music & Lyrics by Gloria Estefan and Emily Estefan

Dramaturgy by Ken Cerniglia
Nine-time Grammy Award® winner Gloria Estefan — whose music has sold over 100 million records worldwide — has shaped generations through song. This world premiere musical continues Estefan’s global legacy — proving that music can rise from anywhere and change everything.
What do you do when the world gives you nothing? You build something beautiful. In a community against all odds, an inspired music teacher starts an orchestra for the students, but they have no instruments. Empty paint cans, a fork, and a bent license plate become a violin, an oil drum transforms into a colorful cello, and the newly formed orchestra hits every note to the beat of something bigger. When the students' instruments become symbols of possibility, the sound is heard around the world.
BASURA is directed by the Broadway stage visionary Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen), and written by National Latino Playwriting Award-winner Karen Zacarías (Native Gardens, Destiny of Desire). Grammy Award® and Tony Award® winner Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, In the Heights) is the musical supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger. Patricia Delgado (Buena Vista Social Club) will choreograph, and Ken Cerniglia (Hadestown, Newsies) rounds out the team as dramaturg.
