Top nine moments of 2023

2023 has been a year of magical stories and memorable moments here at the Alliance Theatre. We can’t thank our community enough for supporting the stories we share with such enthusiasm and joy. Before we ring in the new year, here are just a few of our favorite moments:

  1. Naming our new Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors was the highlight of our year. Their leadership was something we had long been grateful for. We were so excited to share this news with the world and even more so to show you all what they have in store for the Atlanta Arts Community in the seasons to come!
  2. Water for Elephants was the ride of a lifetime! A new musical that had been in the making for years – we were overjoyed to produce this world premiere and can’t wait to see it brought back to life this coming spring on Broadway! Water for Elephants is the fastest Broadway transfer that the Alliance has ever produced, and we're sure that it's because of the enthusiastic response the show received from our audiences here in Atlanta.
  3. Our family programming is some of the most valued work we do at the theater. This year was no different as we produced a number of new works for our youngest audiences including Into The Burrow and Oodles of Doodles. We were also thrilled and honored for our Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young production of Gimme, Please to open at NYC's Lincoln Center.
  4. Our students matter! From student matinee field trips to classes and camps, there are always hundreds of students filling our campus with laughter and wonder at the works we produce. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.
  5. Little Amal (a 12-foot puppet of a refugee child) brought the Atlanta community together with a message of hope! Joined by Yolanda Renee King and our Teen Ensemble, Amal’s walk was an unforgettable experience for the Woodruff Arts Center and the city of Atlanta.
  6. Our directors were dynamic this year! From past actors, to seasoned industry vets, they led the charge in taking such good care of these stories. Pictured here is director Caitlin Hargraves with this year's cast of A Christmas Carol.
  7. For the first time, Alliance Theatre and The Atlanta Opera collaborated on a show of epic proportion! The Shining saw sold out crowds every night with audiences hanging on to their seats during the musical retelling of the iconic Stephen King horror story.
  8. English kicked off our Hertz Stage Series with sold out performances. We are so proud of the care that went into making sure each detail of the production was authentic to the story.  A big thanks to our audiences who made English the #1 best-attended show on the Hertz Stage since our 1989 production of Driving Miss Daisy (which ran for over a year!)!
  9. Ain’t no thing but a Hot Wing King. One of our most memorable shows of the season brought director and playwright Katori Hall (P-Valley) to the Alliance Theatre for her debut as director of The Hot Wing King! This story was sweet and spicy in the best way!

There are many more stories to tell this season, and we can’t wait to share them with you in the New Year! Until then, HAPPY NEW YEAR! See you in 2024!
