The Rehearsal Room Approach

How Theater Directors Motivate Top Talent

In this four-hour learning experience, leaders will get a chance to witness a live rehearsal and learn from a theater director’s unique coaching approach with actors. The director’s techniques will help leaders understand how to prioritize objectives, customize coaching for everyone, and provide effective feedback in real-time. Through guided discussions, leaders will analyze what they have witnessed and learn transferable coaching techniques that can help them improve their own coaching skills. This training will equip leaders with the necessary tools to bring out the best performance from their teams.

Outcomes

Following the session, the team will be able to...

  • Customize coaching approach based on situational objectives and participant differences.
  • Use a balance of supportive inquiry, constructive insight, and concise directives for focused coaching.
  • Create clear, observable goals and mini-milestone markers for development visibility and accountability.
  • Develop a coaching vocabulary of empowering and redirecting language for teams and individuals.
  • Periodically evaluate checkpoints on guidance usefulness to promote self-driven leadership development and adjust consulting approach as needed.

What it could look like

Here is a suggested agenda for this session. It can be customized to align with the team’s specific needs including learning outcomes, session duration, and job scenarios to ensure effectiveness.

Setting the Stage

45 minutes

The session will start with a warm-up and focus exercise, for example:

The team will reflect on a time when a coach, mentor, or leader motivated them to achieve a breakthrough performance, identify the specific language, methods, or insights that catalyzed the growth process, and share them with a partner.

Building the Tool Kit

90 minutes

Next, the team will watch a director conduct a stop/start rehearsal and callout how the director interacts with the actors to create the scene.

Putting into Practice

75 minutes

Then the team will show their work.

Rehearsal Notes

Through a facilitated discussion, the team will identify coaching and feedback best practices to use with their teams back at work.

Moving Forward

15 minutes

The session ends with time to reflect on what has been learned.

Our Implementation Plan

The team will identify strategies to apply what they’ve learned to their job-specific goals.
